The department of Pathology has a long distinguished history and is one of the oldest departments of Pathology in England.

The academic and clinical sections of the department work as an integrated unit. The current incumbant of the of the Leith Chair of Pathology, and the Head of Department is Professor El Nasir Lalani. The current clinical lead is Dr Peter Barber.
The department processes approximately 25,000 surgical biopsies per year with 30 autopsies. There is a high proportion of specialised work. Site-specific cancer services are organised with a named lead consultant histopathologist for each site responsible for implementing national reporting guidelines and providing input into multidisciplinary clinico-pathological meetings. |
Key cancer sites are head and neck, upper gastrointestinal tract, colorectal, breast, urological, hepato-biliary/pancreas, haematolymphoid and skin cancer. There is also a large amount of transplant related work in support of the liver, renal and heart & lung units. Neuropathology accounts for 1,500 specimens and Oral Pathology for 2,300 • specimens. Cytopathology processes around 5,000 – 6,000 non-gynaecological specimens per year. |
Division of Cancer Studies
The Cancer Research UK Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham continues to be at the forefront of cancer research within the UK, enjoying an international reputation in cancer genetics, signal transduction, viral oncology and immunology, cancer gene- and immunotherapy and cancer clinical trials.
Leith Chair of Pathology
Professor Robert Fraser Leith was appointed in 1889 as the first full time Professor of Pathology and Bacteriology. The name ‘Leith’ was attached to the Chair of Experimental pathology in 1949.
